2016 Homilies

I was ordained a Catholic priest in 1994 and left active ministry in 1997. There’s a great deal I don’t miss about priesthood but I always loved preaching and miss it still. I took it seriously and worked hard at it. But sitting the pew week after week I often found myself disappointed in the quality of what I was hearing.

In fairness, preaching isn’t easy. The preacher is speaking in public, finding meaning in works that are more than 2,000 years old, and making them relevant to a modern audience. That said, other than celebrating the sacraments, there are few things more important.

After spending some time feeling frustrated I decided to do something about it. In 2013 I began writing a sermons myself and publishing it. Not to brag but I haven’t missed a week since July 14, 2013. Each week I base it on the 1st reading and the Gospel in the Catholic lectionary and publish it about a week ahead of time.

As I was moving these pages from my old host I noticed that the homily from May 1, 2016 was missing. I know I wrote it but I simply can’t find it. Apologies.

If you find value in this I’d be happy to email it to you. Just contact me at <mailto:homilies@icloud.com>. I generally send it out on Tuesday evening before the Sunday.
